Indian speaker at EU DataViz 2019

Image
Recently I had the honour to be a speaker at the EU DataViz 2019, Luxembourg organized by the Publication Office of the European Union. Apart from the fact that I was selected to be one of the speakers I am also happy that there was at least one Indian speaker in the list of speakers. If you are interested to know more see my BI blog post -  https://akvkbi.blogspot.com/2019/11/before-and-beyond-data-visualization.html  .

Bharati - Solution for one Nation, one language

Image
Currently there is a move to make Hindi as the national language of India and there is resistance from several non-hindi speaking states.  For those who don't know, India doesn't have a national language, India has two official languages, English and Hindi. My idea to solve India's one nation one language issue would be to use Bharati as the national language. India is called Bharat, and the name Bharati fits perfectly. Bharati could be the Indian English (later to be known only as Bharati), where Indian organizations have full authority over the language. Cambridge or Oxford shouldn't dictate how to pronounce something or how to spell a word.

If you always take the flyover

If you always take the flyover how will you notice the people living under the flyover? 08.July.2019 Based on seeing the extremely contrasting condition of people in Mumbai, India on my recent visit.

Politicians are not bad, we are feckless

Yes, politicians are not bad, we are feckless.  If we would have the real interest towards nation building and if we would be responsible our politicians wouldn't be bad. We wouldn't allow them to get there. If they have got there, we wouldn't allow them to be there. How conveniently we cover up our irresponsible behavior by blaming the politicians for everything that goes wrong? It's time we understand that the MLAs and MPs (Lok Sabha) are elected by us and they in turn elect the Chief Minister of the state and Prime Minister of the country respectively. We have a choice to elect as to who will govern us. This is why it's called democracy. We behave as if it's some people's prerogative to be ministers. No it's not. They did not land here from the Sky and take over power and control of the State or Nation, they are not kings to pass on the power to their children, and it's not military rule.  We have elected them. We had a choice and we have a ...

How to get good government?

Vote for the candidate, who you think based on your research will do the best for you in the long term without considering candidate's identities (Religion, Sex, Nationality, Language etc). When everyone does this, we will have good government. Written in April, 2015, published in anoopkumarvk.blogspot.com (now deleted)

You don't have to be an American

You don't have to be an American, or move to the USA, or study in the MITs, or in the IITs to become an entrepreneur. If you have a vision and can be fully alive in the present then you too can make it happen.   Written on 3rd July, 2017

Is Bangalore’s Traffic situation making us waste over 100 billion rupees on Fuel?

Image
I bought a car recently in Munich and I noticed that my car dashboard shows that if I drive smoothly with not many traffic signals/other stops I can travel 100 KM with 6.5 liters of petrol. And comparing this with a drive where I have to stop many times, go in first gear for longer duration then I can travel 100 KM with 10 liters of Petrol. Noticing this simple thing triggered a thought in my mind, how much fuel is wasted in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) because of the traffic mess? I did a simple and rough calculation (given below) and the numbers aren’t making me happy. Has anyone done any research on this area? Is my calculation totally away from reality? any thoughts? If the rough calculations are near reality, does anyone know if someone is doing something to improve the situation? Simple and rough calculation details below In Munich with far less traffic compared to Bangalore if there is a difference of 3.5 liters of petrol for 100 KM travel then for easy calcul...

Let's not change our accent, let's deliver content

Image
Let's not change our accent, let's deliver content Similar to previous post about changing names, there is a growing trend where some people try to fake accents. I don't understand why people change accent when they speak? Why not speak with natural accent? Why consider one accent superior and another inferior? As we grow up, we pick up an accent based on our location, our schooling, our interactions with people etc. This is natural. If it's Indian or Italian or Spanish accent, let it be. Why try to change to US or UK accent. You were neither born there nor raised there, then why try to fake an accent? For example in India, people from different states have different accents, and I find nothing wrong in that. I realized this when I moved to the UK in 2009. People from Birmingham in the UK speak with different accent compared to people from Manchester. These people are native English speakers and they speak with the accent based on where they were raised. G...

Don't change your name, step up your game

Image
Don't change your name, step up your game I see an increasing trend where people change their names (not officially but socially) to more English sounding names. Couple of random examples -  Dinesh to Danny, Anand to Andy etc. If these were nick names (you were called by your family and friends as you were growing up, then it's OK), but if this change of name is to please a certain population, please give it a second thought. Why should we please someone else by changing our name? I feel it's a sign of covering up incompetence. Instead, shouldn't we work on improving our competency and earn respect, and make people learn our names? Give it a thought. Let's not change our name, let's step up our game

Independence Day message from an IT Professional

Image
Posted in Linkedin on 15th Aug 2017 Those who don't have time may skim through the bold lines. To India, to Indians in India and around the world, to those who believe in the potential of India, to those who care for India, to those who want to bring positive changes in India and the world, I wish everyone a very Happy Independence Day from Germany . Here is a message (please consider more like a collection of related thoughts, request or appeal) from a common man, an IT Professional. I think this message is not only applicable for India but also for all of the emerging countries , but I just couldn't stop myself from sharing it on India's 71st Independence day. This message is based on own thoughts, based on reflection, based on careful observations, based on my interactions with people around the world, understanding how others see India and Indian IT Professionals, and how Indians see India and Indian IT Professionals. Before the invasions, Indian subcontinen...
