Why does a digital payment card (credit, debit etc) have an expiry date?

Why does a digital payment card (credit, debit etc) have an expiry date? Is it only for backward compatibility? If yes, isn't it time to get rid of expiry dates for digital payment cards?

Was doing a payment online and got this question, did a quick check but couldn't find a reason for digital payment cards to have an expiry date.  For plastic cards I could find reasons related to wear and tear of the card, fraud prevention, marketing opportunities etc but having an expiry date for digital card is like having a TV Antenna mandatorily on rooftop for watching videos online on PC (without a real TV) just because previously we needed a TV Antenna for a TV :-) .
